Education Opportunities for Honors Choirs Singers
Singing in one of the Honors Choirs is the best way to become a better vocal musician, BUT there are many things that a motivated singer can do to enhance that experience and his/her skills:
- Sing in your school and/or church choir.
- Play an instrument.
- Take private vocal and/or instrument lessons.
Honors Choirs keeps a list of teachers giving private lessons in the area and would be happy to share that with you. - Join the Boys & Girls Club of Rochester ($10 yearly fee) so that you can participate in Discovering Music with Honors Choirs. Korrie Johnson, music instructor for Honors Choirs, teaches these introductory music classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Call 287-2300 for more information.
- Take advantage of the internet. Here are four free music theory sites that we recommend:
http://www.musictheory.net
http://www.zzounds.com/edu--musictheory
http://library.thinkquest.org/15413/theory/theory.htm
http://www.teoria.com/tutorials/reading.index.htm - Use the Honors Choirs lab computer. We have two music education software programs, Auralia (an ear-training program) and Musition (a music theory program). These are available to interested Chorale and Concert Choir singers who will need to go through a short orientation in order to be able to use the computer independently. Singers should always call ahead to be sure that the computer room is available.
